Pokemon Go has been developed jointly by Niantic along with Nintendo. The game was in development for past 2 years and was launched officially in the US on 6th July ’16. The popularity of the game was such that it reached #1 position on the top download charts within 13 hours in the US and 4 hours in Germany. The game is yet to be launched in many key markets and the team at Niantic is working towards it. Due to huge demand for the game the company experienced server outages last week.
The popularity of the game has been unprecedented and has caught the imagination of game developers, marketers, and analysts. In fact, the Nintendo stock doubled its valuation by $17 billion dollars after the game launched.
Pokemon Go has opened the door for augmented reality based mobile games with game developers all over the world keeping a close watch on how far the Pokemon Go story would travel. Earlier last week Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella applauded the developers for building the game and also shared his views on augmented reality.
“I think it’s fantastic to see these augmented reality applications getting built, because the best thing that can happen when you’re creating a new category is for applications that are these killer apps, whether it be game or in the industrial scenario, to get invested in,”
