Virtual Reality has become the catchphrase for 2017. Last year two of the five top automobile brands in India used virtual reality to market their new models. Past year has also seen some of the best virtual reality marketing campaigns in the last ten years since the emergence of the technology.

Trip to Mars – Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Martin worked along with McCann last year to deliver an incredible outer-space experience to young students.  Lockheed Martin’s brief to the agency was to provide a realistic experience on the surface of Mars to students on a school bus without them realising that it.

The result was the first-ever group virtual reality experience. The school bus provided students with immersive, moving field trip on Mars which they could see, hear and feel without using a VR or audio headset. The campaign won IAB Award 2016 for the best use of virtual reality.

The Life Garden – Atomic London

Cancer Research UK the first virtual reality tribute garden holding over 100,000 flowers – one for each person who has left a gift in their Will to Cancer Research UK.

Cancer Research UK partnered with award-winning garden designer Antonia Young and visual effects company Rushes to deliver an immersive and realistic experience of a virtual garden.

The brand unveiled the virtual garden to visitors at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Visitors were able to enjoy a real garden that mirrored the virtual design. They could put on an Oculus Rift headset and were transported to the centre of the garden to view the breathtaking virtual landscape.

The garden provided every visitor with a personalised experience. Visitors could see their loved one’s name blossoming out of a flower, with other supporters names appearing in the background. The campaign also captured visitors email addresses to send them a picture of loved one’s flower after the show.

Michelle Obama – 360-degree Infographic Video – Verge

Verge interviewed Michelle Obama last year to create the world’s first 360-degree video infographic. The graphics elements in the video are placed right in the centre of the video making it easier for the users to view it. The campaign received 1.2 million views on Facebook and 445K views on YouTube.

The team at Verge has also created a video sharing their experience and challenges faced during filming the 360-degree infographic video for Michelle Obama.

Hyundai Elantra – 360-degree Experience

Hyundai wanted to give its users a test drive of its new car Elantra. The team worked with its creative agency and Bollywood celebrity Shahrukh Khan to provide an immersive experience to potential buyers of the car. The video garnered over 91k views on YouTube & 367K views on Facebook.

On the sets of Baahubali – VR Experience

Baahubali is among the most awaited movies of 2017. The team at Baahubali used virtual reality to provide users with an immersive experience on the sets of the film. The team created multiple assets for virtual reality covering the interview of lead actors and even a video from Director S. S. Rajamouli detailing how the viewers could view the 360-degree video.

The video assets combined on Facebook garnered over a million views and over 2.3 million views on YouTube becoming the biggest virtual reality campaign from India last year.
